Sergey Kholev: Modern cows produce 60% more milk than in 1950

The speaker draw the example of the Holstein breed, which is common in 128 countries, especially in the USA, where active, long-term work is being done to improve the livestock.

Sergey Kholev reported that in 1950 there were 25 million heads in the USA, while by 2020 this number had decreased to 9 million. At the same time, modern cows produce 60% more milk and consume 13% less dry matter.

The average productivity of a Holstein cow is currently 12,769 kg of milk per year, which is equivalent to 10,839 bottles of milk or 1,268 kg of cheese.

The speaker listed several global trends that will influence the development of dairy farming in the future. Sergey Kholev noted that by 2050 the world's population will increase by 28%. Population growth will cause the need to increase production, but at the same time, the eco-agenda will continue to influence the sector. The expert drew attention to the fact that if the number of dairy cows under the influence of these factors is likely to grow, then the total number of farms, on the contrary, may decrease by 45%.
